A shorter day, but good as it allowed time to explore the Roman city of Merida. Founded by Augustus way back when as a site where retired soldiers were gifted land, it became a prominent city in its own right, and boasted the usual array of temples, forums, theatres and a circus. Many still survive in some form today, including the theatre which is used for live events, and the bridge, which is very impressive. Unfortunately, tonight’s live event is a Colombian popstar, so as much as I would have liked to attend an event in the ancient theatre, shelling out 100€ for a musician you’ve never heard of seemed a bit steep.
I did take in many of the ruins from a distance, but the highlight for me was the Roman Art museum, where most of the artifacts unearthed in the city are housed. And because I’m of a certain age, entry was free!

To cap off the day, a few of us peregrinos masqueraded as locals, hanging out at one of the numerous bars in Plaza de España as it got dark. On the way to the Plaza we cheered on the runners in a race, but even at 8 p. m. it was still 30⁰, so way too hot to run I would have thought. Maybe that’s why the last runner was trailed by an ambulance – and also a hearse, but hopefully the latter was a coincidence!

Clearly I should only take photos in landscape, as the portrait ones are huge!

Great photos Andrew.
