
Cáceres was listed by UNESCO way back in 1986. The narrow twisting streets of the old town have escaped major modernization for a very long time. Unfortunately, many peregrinos only pass through without stopping, as the closure of albergues before and after the town make itinerary planning difficult. As I’d originally planned to spend an extra day in Merida, I have a ‘spare’ day, so here I am (along with a few of our original group who have the same flexibility. There’s also an annoying cold doing the rounds (oh, the joy of sleeping in a room with 15 others!) so a little bit longer siesta is most welcome.
