Via de la plata day 42: Cea to Botos, 28.6km

Cea clock tower

The above photo should have been included in yesterday’s post, but it seemed relevant once I’d breakfasted (is this a word?) on several slabs of toast made with the local bread. Delicious.  And eating them slowly ensured that it was light enough to walk when I was done

It was a very cool and mostly gray day, but with my cycling sleeves to supplement my icebreaker merino wool t-shirt, I was adequately attired. One local farmer, however, gave me a funny look as I strolled by:   he was wearing gumboots, a heavy overcoat and a toque/wooly hat. Mind you, it was only 8⁰C! My luck in skillfully avoiding the rain showers finally ran out today, and I had to deploy the rain poncho for the last 2 km. I almost made it 5 consecutive dry days in notoriously wet Galicia!

Bridge in the hamlet of A Ponte!
Not sure whether this advisory was for motorists or peregrinos

The walk today was very pleasant scenery – more of the same beautiful forests and Galician countryside, hamlets with amazing old stone buildings, and ancient pathways under the oak trees. This beauty does have its downside, as the acorns can become marbles underfoot very quickly if you’re not paying attention. Another hazard today was the pig hunting expedition by a large group of men and their dogs. Maybe they’d seen the sign on the road. Fortunately I came across them while wearing my hi-viz poncho, but given that there was a row of guys with shotguns beside the trail, I made sure to confirm with them that it was safe to continue. This got a few laughs, as between miming and my best Spanish, I assured them that I wasn’t a wild pig!

Tonight is a rare night when I’m not in an albergue, so I plan to enjoy the luxury of a real bath towel and a bed with sheets. And now that I’ve figured out how to make the heater work (operating instructions courtesy of Duck Duck Go – search engine devoid of promoted results) some laundry may be in my future!
