Via Tolosana day 17: the cost of living!

Le Grange (Giscaro) to Léguiven, 29.3 km

The day’s highlight: the driver even sounded his horn for me 😀

It’s a slow day on the Camino when you only take two photos, and I’ve used one before writing any text! It was a cool day, mostly, with a layer of what I usually think of as marine cloud – although Toulouse is a long way from both the Atlantic and the Med! It made for great walking weather, and by the time the clouds dispersed, I was almost at my destination.

The apps and maps give routing options for today and the following days. The recommended route today was to follow the road, but after enjoying a mid-morning coffee in the town in a cafe at the main intersection, I decided that there was too much traffic for my liking and took the slightly longer route through the farmland and forest.

Being close to Toulouse means that the rural towns I’m now passing through are essentially dormitory towns for the big city. Léguiven, where I’m staying tonight, is a case in point: the centre of the town is virtually devoid of businesses, and even the grocery store is a brand new Lidl on the main road towards Toulouse. Lidl is exactly what we need in Canada (and probably in NZ for that matter) where we suffer from only two supermarket chains (masquerading as competition with all their sub brands). Lidl is the European discount brand. There’s no merchandising as complete cartons are placed on the shelves or aisles and you just pick up what you need. And it’s so much cheaper than the competition. The one item that caught my eye was in the wine section: the only bottle with a security tag was a St Emilion Grand Cru, priced at €9.90. That’s about CAD 16, which in a Vancouver wine store is the pricing on the bottom shelf pizza or cooking wine category! I settled for a very palatable Bordeaux for about CAD 4!

And talking of food, I took a photo of this small poster at last night’s Gîte. They had many posters of sayings and philosophy, but this one seemed particularly relevant. Not sure how legible it will be once you xoom in to read it.
