Via de la plata day 4: Almaden de la plata to El Real de la Jara, 13.9 km

The storks have added their own decorations to the bell tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia in Almaden

A shorter day, but doesn’t classify as a rest day as there were too many hills! As my heels showed some hot spots after yesterday, I channeled my inner Max and walked in socks and sandals (I hesitate to cast dispersions on Germans given one of our happy band is of that nation.) Even though it was Sunday, a local cafe served us cafe and tostadas at 0700 (and at 2€, the first bargain of the day). Then it was rolling hills of dehesa using what appear to be farm tracks,  but we have become convinced that they are modest roads being built to convert the former walking trail into a multi-use path for the via de la Plata.

Among the oaks

El Real has a brand new municipal albergue, but as it didn’t open until 1 pm, we were forced to patronize the local bar, which served me a sandwich combining serrano ham, fried peppers and fried pork. An unexpected but delicious combo! The albergue was surprised at the sudden influx of guests – there are 10 of us – but we are adequately accommodated and counting down the hours until the recommended restaurant opens at 830p.

Pigs, goats, horses… we joked about making an animal bingo card!

And finally, a castle. Note the crow skillfully captured soaring around the battlements:

  1. Looks like you’ve got some traveling companions. It looks really dry there , hopefully it’s not too hot. I hope you’re heels are healing (or is that heeling). Happy trails. Cheers Jamie
