After a couple of ankle rolls yesterday, Susan’s ankle was a bit swollen so she took a taxi day and I walked on in the drizzle. Actually, Susan was killing time having coffee in the local bar when someone overheard her asking the barman to order her a taxi, and offered her a ride. The camino provides!
The walk was quite pleasant if one ignores the weather (all day in the poncho😕). Empty grasslands in the morning with the drone of Autovia traffic for company. Makes me wonder if the farmers sold the land at a handsome price for the Autovia and are now happily retired in apartments on the Costa del Sol! Certainly no farming happening. Also a lack of wildlife today other than two rabbits and a flat frog (not its botanical name). And a strange animal call which in another part of the world could be mistaken for a moose.

In the space of one day the landscape and trees have changed, from the small leafed oaks of the dehesa to larger leafed oaks more recognizable as such. Rock has traditionally been used for everything in this part of Spain, and the older buildings have slate roofs. There were numerous small villages, but only the first, which was on the “N” national road, had services (aka a bar for coffee!) The others seem to be in a struggle for survival, and seldom do you see young people.

Tonight we are in Asturianos, which maybe Spanish for ‘walnut tree’, given the profusion of them in the town. Another check mark on the bingo card😄. Tomorrow maybe stormy, so the 35⁰ days are now a distant memory. Even my camino tan has faded.

I hope you’re enjoying yourself. Good for you for continuing on. I hope Susan’s ankle is okay.
