Via de la plata day 39: Laza to Xunqueira de Ambía, 32.6 km

Climbing out of the misty valley

The guide had this as two stages, but in the interests of my compressed itinerary, I combined them. Even if one wasn’t compressing, there doesn’t seem much sense in doing an 11 km stage, especially when you need to leave the albergue at 0800, and the suggested destination has a population of just 14. That said, the slog up the hill to meet those 14 people certainly justified a second coffee in the early morning sunshine.

Much of the day was very pleasant walking – forests, both pine and native, barren rocky areas with heather, broom and gorse, and wonderful oak and chestnut forests. There was one long straight tedious section crossing farmland on the valley floor, but the last 10 km erased the bad memory very quickly.

The albergue in Ambia is quite busy, with most here before I arrived and I’m not sure where they all appeared from. Maybe they did an overnight stop in the town of 14! Mostly Italians from what I can determine, but maybe a few Spaniards as well. Certainly no native English speakers,  but that suits me fine as after two hard days I don’t feel very sociable!

The albergue is on the outskirts of the town, so it’s time to hit the metropolis to see if I can find a proper meal after two days of snacking!

The camino signs are getting a bit risque!
