Day eight: Arras to Bapaume

Back on shank’s pony. We’d planned to leave our trusty steeds at a ‘recycling’ store we found online, but we passed it by without realizing. Rather than back tracking, we parked our bikes at the roadside – I’m sure they will soon find new owners!

It was a great day for a walk through the peaceful French countryside: cloudy and an ideal 17c.

But it has not always been peaceful, as reminded by the Commonwealth Cemeteries (well sign posted) and the occasional German cemetery (not sign posted at all, and easy to miss). And even 100 years since the war, farmers still ploughing up battle remnants:

We arrived early afternoon in the town of Bapaume, jut in time for the parade – and everyone loves a parade! We have no idea what the occasion was, but the locals were having fun.

Daily km: 30

Memorable moment(s): the trailside rusted shells.
