Via Aurelia day 6: 3rd half

Bras to Brignoles 19.3 km, bus to Carcès ??  km

There being no bus from Bras, I set off in light rain for Brignoles, where Google maps told me there was a bus the rest of the way. With my stomach ailment still afflicting me, 34 km may be a day stage too much.

The first section was quite enjoyable: narrow roads followed by a genuine ancient walking path through the forest – or what passes for forest in this generally harsh environment. It even had rock cairns, pre-dating the folks with red & white paint marking random power poles by perhaps hundreds of years. Every now and then the forest vanished briefly and there were little oases of vineyards. It seems the entire area is either vineyards or forest!

The stretch into Brignoles was less appealing – 7 km on a back road only separated from the busy National road by a dis-used railway line. But fortunately Google maps didn’t lead me astray, and I boarded the bus to Carcès. Rather than going direct, my €1.50 fare bought me a 50 minute tiki tour of several regional villages before arriving at my destination. The village of Contignac looked particularly interesting – search up images on your browser of choice!
