Nukumisafin Beach to Ozaki Beach, 20.8 km
Yesterday’s scenery was stunning compared to today, so I’ve gone back through my photos to add some from yesterday to make up for today! Today’s stretch was a bit like walking along the Kaikoura Coast (which may only make sense to Kiwi readers) on SH1. Right down to our lodgings at Japan’s equivalent of Goose Bay!
The Japanese coast is strewn with garbage – both domestic and from the fishing industry. Mile after mile of plastic, styrofoam rope, nets etc. Actually their roadsides would give the Italians a run for their money, the only thing the Japanese don’t seem to dump is loads of renovation materials, appliances and mattresses (perhaps because they don’t use mattresses 😄)
They must also spend gazillions on civil defense projects. The breakwaters and storm barriers are huge and endless. In the first photo taken from our room at the Ozaki Lodge, the top of the 6m wall is visible. These wall are seemingly endless.
Here’s a couple of yesterday’s photos. Happy hikers because it’s not currently raining, and an interesting village taken from a bridge. Taking it was also interesting due to the steel mesh barrier!
Today we crossed into Kochi prefecture, where on the above map the temples are indicated with red markers. Each prefecture has been given a Buddhist dojo (place of training). Tokushima prefecture (blue dots) is the place of spiritual awakening. Kochi is the place of ascetic training, Ehime the place of enlightenment, and Kagawa the place of Nirvana. We’ve definitely renounced material comforts over the first section, so stay tuned on our progress on spiritual awakening!
